Located in one of the poorest counties in the nation, Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center has served local residents for over four decades.
The Native Reservation of the Oglala Sioux Tribe has a poverty rate of more than 80 percent, extraordinarily high unemployment, and suicide rates that are triple the national average.
PRCC offers a range of services designed to provide help and hope. Pastor Dan has been leading the center, which is part of the Lutheran Lakota Ministry, since 2020.
Although he is a pastor, he doesn't have a church - instead he is focused on providing hot meals and a warm place to sleep, especially during harsh North Dakota winters.
The organization also provides a safe space for self-improvement through addiction, recovery, and grief support groups; internet access for education and job applications; and a sense of community support.
